ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) — The Mosaic Life Care Foundation recognized a Central High School student for the difference she’s making in her community. <\/p>\n

Natalia Larkin received the Mosaic Life Care Foundation’s 2026 Judith K. Sabbert Spark Award. The award is presented to individuals who have created lasting change in their school or community after experiencing emPowerU programs. <\/p>\n

Larkin has participated in numerous emPowerU programs over the past few years. She was inspired to create her own project after attending the emPowerU Civic Immersion program with her classmates.<\/p>\n

Larkin’s project consists of creating a cultural space for prominent languages used in St. Joseph.<\/p>\n

The project aims to help immigrants who come to St. Joseph and helps young people make friends by providing popular book titles in multiple languages. <\/p>\n

“I was talking it over with my parents, coming up with ideas,” said Larkin. “Since my parents are immigrants, we kind of landed on that (her project). I love books, so obviously the natural connection was to make libraries and books more accessible to those from different countries.”<\/p>\n

“Natalia has found her special spark,” said Sheri Spader, life trustee of the Foundation’s board. “She figured out what she could do to help bring light to our community.”<\/p>\n

In October 2024, her project was awarded a $2,000 Jump Starter grant through emPowerU.<\/p>\n

“I’m really hoping for it to improve social interactions for those who don’t speak English and improve their understanding of culture,” said Larkin.<\/p>\n

The Foundation said it thanks Larkin for her commitment to volunteerism and community investment.<\/p>\n
