DES MOINES, Ia. (KQTV) – The #9 Benedictine College football team came away with one of the best victories in school history on Saturday as the Ravens knock off defending NAIA National Champion, #1 Grand View 21-17.

It was a back and forth game throughout. Benedictine lost its 7-3 lead in the first half to trail 10-7 at the break. Grand View then added another touchdown in the third quarter to take a 17-7 lead.

Then at the end of the third quarter, junior quarterback Patrick Heitert had his second short rushing touchdown of the game as the Ravens pulled within 17-14.

But the play of the game came on special teams with 9 minutes left in the 4th quarter. Grand View muffed a punt on their own 1 yard line, sophomore safety Anthony Lonergan fell on the football for a touchdown to give Benedictine College a 17-14 lead.

Grand View had 2 more possessions afterwards, but all the Vikings could muster was a missed field goal and then ran out of downs on their next drive.

Heitert finished 17-of-25 through the air for 218 yards, he added 30 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns on the ground. Sophomore and Atchison High School alum Xiomar Hernandez led Benedictine College with 72 yards rushing on 16 carries.

It’s Benedictine’s first victory over Grand View since 2018 and snapped a 73 game win streak the Vikings had going in the regular season.

“We wanted to come in here and we wanted to play really good football, we wanted to work on improving ourselves and I thought that showed up,” said head coach Joel Osborn. “We had a good plan on both sides of the football and special teams and we just really did a good job taking care of the football. We didn’t really hurt ourselves too much today and that’s the big thing is when you hurt yourselves, Grand View is gonna take advantage of that. It ended up that we did it back to them and that’s probably the key to to winning.”

It’s a redemption victory for Benedictine, as Grand View knocked the team out of the NAIA Playoffs last season.

The win brings Benedictine College to 3-1 on the season and the Ravens will next host St. Ambrose in Atchison, Kansas on Saturday, September 26th at 1 pm.
