Gene Field Bridge Now Open

Edit: The Gene Field bridge will not be open for another week or two due to weather conditions.

The Missouri Department of Transportation officially reopened the Gene Field Road Bridge over Interstate 29 in St. Joseph on Friday, June 26, 2026. A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at 10:00 a.m. on the east side of the structure to celebrate the completion of the project ahead of its initial July timeline.

The essential east-west corridor, which carries approximately 6,500 vehicles daily, had been closed since November 2025.

Background and Construction Timeline

The original bridge structure, built in 1962, was compromised in November 2025 after being struck by an oversized semi-truck load traveling on Interstate 29. Following safety evaluations, MoDOT closed the bridge permanently and finalized emergency replacement plans.

The replacement contract was awarded to Clarkson Construction Company in January 2026 for approximately 5.56 million dollars. Demolition of the old structure took place over a single weekend in early February 2026, requiring a temporary closure and detour of Interstate 29. Crews worked through the spring to construct the entirely new bridge infrastructure.

New Bridge Upgrades

The newly constructed Gene Field Road Bridge features structural and aesthetic improvements designed to serve the community better:

  • Pedestrian Infrastructure: Sidewalks have been added to both sides of the bridge, providing safe pedestrian access and connecting directly to the existing sidewalk network on the west side.

  • Aesthetic Design: The structure features a decorative form liner to enhance the visual appearance of the overpass above Interstate 29.

  • Traffic Relief: The reopening eliminates the prolonged detours that impacted local traffic and surrounding businesses, particularly along Woodbine Road, over the last seven months.

With the ribbon-cutting concluded, traffic lanes and pedestrian walkways are fully operational. MoDOT continues to remind drivers to remain alert and follow posted speed limits as local traffic patterns adjust to the reopening.
