Patee House and a booming river city

Patee House opened in 1858 as a luxury hotel and later served as Pony Express headquarters. After the Civil War, St. Joseph grew as a rail and wholesale center. By 1900 more than 70 passenger trains a day moved through town. Patee House is now a National Historic Landmark museum covering life here from the 1850s into the early 20th century.
