YWCA hosts “Hear my Voice” for Domestic Violence Awareness Month

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) — The YWCA kicked off Domestic Violence Awareness Month on October 1st with its annual “Hear My Voice” event, which spotlighted the experiences of those impacted by domestic violence.
Jade Lashley, Community Support Manager at the YWCA, said the event provides a space for survivors to share their stories through art, music, and poetry.
“Healing takes shape in so many various ways,” Lashley said. “It allows that survivor to share their experience in a way that doesn’t have to be telling that story over and over.”
The event featured a survivor speaker, a poem by a survivor and advocate, and art pieces from community members across Buchanan, Andrew, and DeKalb County.
Lashley stressed that domestic violence is a year-round issue, often happening behind closed doors.
“If somebody is willing to disclose that abuse to you, it’s our duty to listen to them, believe them, and provide whatever support we can,” she said.
