City to hold groundbreaking for new South Side Fire Station 10

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) — The City of St. Joseph announced it would hold a groundbreaking for a new $6.2 million South Side Fire Station.

The project, funded through the City’s Capital Improvement Program, will be constructed at 303 E. Hyde Park Ave. The new station will replace the century-old facility currently located at 101 Illinois Ave.

The city will hold the groundbreaking at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6.

According to a city news release, the Hyde Park location was selected because it is expected to provide a quicker response time for the surrounding area compared to the current station.

The new station will feature several amenities designed to improve firefighter safety, training and general operations.

The drive-through-style station design will allow for more efficient movement of emergency vehicles, while a “clean concept” will separate decontamination areas from living and eating quarters to help minimize firefighters’ exposure to harmful toxins.

The new station will also include a sauna to assist with post-fire detoxification, a workout room to support firefighters’ physical conditioning and a mezzanine providing additional storage and training space.

Street signage will provide information to the public and the additional storage space will be available for a brush truck, boat, foam trailer and reserve ladder truck.

The city said the Chief White Cloud statue and other items that have been located at 303 Hyde Park Ave. will be moved to an area of the property north of the new fire station.

Architect Short, Elliot and Hendrickson, Inc., has completed more than 125 fire station designs before this one. Herner Construction was chosen as the construction company for the project.

Construction is expected to be completed in the late fall to early winter of 2027, weather permitting.
