Naval Captain, St. Joseph native retires after 27 years of service

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) — A St. Joseph native retired from the United States Navy as a Captain after 27 years of service.

A 1999 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Captain Hannah A. Kriewaldt concluded her journey by relinquishing command of the Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair (SUPSHIP) Newport News in Virginia.

The SUPSHIP is the Navy command charged with administering the multi-billion-dollar construction, modernization and delivery of all nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines.

The transfer of command was formally executed when Kriewaldt read her official detachment orders before turning over the helm to Capt. Michael A. Sammataro.

Kriewaldt departed St. Joseph in the summer of 1995 to enter the U.S. Naval Academy. She earned a Master’s degree from the Naval Postgraduate School.

She served as Chief Engineer (CHENG) aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) and directed the post-delivery testing trials for the lead next-generation carrier USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78).

Kriewaldt commanded SUPSHIP Newport News for four years, from 2022 to 2026, leading over 600 Navy civilian and military professionals overseeing critical national defense shipbuilding programs.

In addition, she was awarded her second Legion of Merit during a dual change-of-command and retirement ceremony marking her transition to “Family & Future: A New Voyage” with her daughters.
