Benedictine College dedicates new Moritz Library with special guest Amy Coney Barrett

ATCHISON, Ks. (KQTV) — Benedictine College has celebrated a big milestone, the completion of the new Moritz Library in D’Aniello Hall, with a dedication and a special guest speaker, Amy Coney Barrett, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.

It has been years in the making, but the Moritz Library at Benedictine College has officially opened its doors.

The new facility offers study and lecture rooms, classrooms, and of course, a physical library offering books that students will need to succeed.

In the dedication ceremony, guest speakers emphasized the importance of physical media in an age of technology, and recognizing American history.

Guest speaker U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant Arturo Hernandez shared his personal story.

“I came to America as a child. America became my home and today I have the honor of serving the country I am so proud to call my own,” Hernandez said. “That is the American story. It is the story of hope. It is a story of opportunity. It is a story of sacrifice. It is a story worth defending.”

Barrett spoke on the importance of America’s founding fathers and how the library reflected their likeness.

“When the delegates gathered in Independence Hall, they debated. They disagreed. They drafted. And they created what we now call the Miracle of Philadelphia. Our Constitution,” Barrett said.

Her closing remarks focused on acceptance of others.

“My hope is that this library will help the students of Benedictine College defend the American project today,” Barrett said. “I hope that it will bring them together to discuss new ideas, forge friendships, and importantly, learn to disagree respectfully.”
